The situation arises after U.S. President Donald Trump announced an increase in tariffs by 50% on a selection of Canadian exports, including some dairy products, alcoholic drinks, motor vehicles, and related items. The newly imposed tariffs are set to begin on August 19, raising concerns about the potential impact on trade between the neighboring countries.
Carney has openly criticized the tariff measures, arguing that they breach the terms of the Canada–United States–Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). He characterized the move as yet another instance of Washington’s unilateral approach to trade. Despite the tensions, Carney remains optimistic about resolving the disagreements through dialogue.
The prime minister revealed that he recently engaged in discussions with President Trump, during which they concurred on enhancing trade negotiations to address the ongoing issues.
