OpenNebula Systems has unveiled its latest offering, OpenNebula 7.4 “Helix,” an updated version of the company’s open-source cloud and virtualization platform. This new release is designed to make enterprise cloud management smoother while catering to the rising demands of AI infrastructure. A major highlight of this update is the revamped Sunstone management interface, which promises a faster and more user-friendly experience for cloud administrators. The new features focus on enhanced navigation, resource inspection capabilities, reorganized settings, and GUI-based VirtioFS management, all aimed at streamlining everyday cloud operations.
Further strengthening its automation capabilities, OpenNebula 7.4 introduces OneSwap for bulk VMware migrations, along with improvements to OneDRS resource scheduling, intelligent datastore selection, and storage migration processes. The update also includes enhancements to OneKS for managing Kubernetes deployments, helping organizations update their infrastructure while reducing operational complexities.
In response to the needs of AI and high-performance computing workloads, OpenNebula 7.4 has added support for Axelera AI accelerators and integrated native NVIDIA GPU functionality within the Slurm appliance. Additionally, it offers automated Bare Metal as a Service (BMaaS) orchestration through the NVIDIA Infrastructure Controller (NICo). Networking improvements like VLAN Group-level authorization and Open vSwitch Switchdev support are also part of this release, ensuring better performance and security within multi-tenant environments.
The platform’s data protection and backup capabilities have been strengthened through updates to the OpenNebula Backup Exporter (OneBEX), as well as the introduction of Selected Disk Backups and production-ready support for Ubuntu 26.04. Other enhancements cover storage, monitoring, networking, high availability, and compatibility with VMware.
Alongside the core platform update, OpenNebula Systems has launched OpenNebula Apps (OneApps) 7.4.0, which includes refreshed virtual appliances, AArch64 support for OneKS, Alpine Linux 3.24 compatibility, and enhanced deployment features for enterprise cloud environments. The company emphasizes that OpenNebula 7.4 is geared toward simplifying cloud operations, speeding up infrastructure modernization, and supporting the next wave of AI-driven private and sovereign cloud deployments.
