Qantas Announces Nonstop Sydney-New York Routes, Boosting Economic Connectivity by 2028

by admin477351

In an ambitious move to expand its global reach, Qantas is set to make history with the launch of nonstop flights between Sydney and New York by mid-2028. This service marks the airline’s second major initiative under the Project Sunrise program, following the anticipated Sydney-London route scheduled for 2027.

The introduction of this new route will establish the first-ever scheduled nonstop commercial flight connecting Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport directly with New York’s JFK Airport. Currently, Qantas passengers traveling this route must endure a stopover in Los Angeles, extending the journey to approximately 21 hours. With the new service, travel time is expected to be reduced to about 18 hours.

Tickets for the nonstop Sydney-New York flights are projected to be available for purchase in August 2027. While specific fares and the precise start date have not been disclosed, the flights will be operated using the advanced Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, which are capable of journeys up to 22 hours long. Qantas has placed an order for 12 of these aircraft, which will accommodate 238 passengers across various classes, including first-class suites, business suites, premium economy, and economy cabins.

Recognizing the challenges of ultra-long-haul travel, Qantas is innovating with a “wellbeing zone” located between the economy and premium economy sections. This area will allow passengers to stretch, access guided exercise activities, and enjoy snacks and drinks, enhancing comfort during the extensive flight.

The Project Sunrise program underscores Qantas’s commitment to forging direct connections between Australia and major global cities, minimizing the need for stopovers. The airline anticipates the delivery of its first A350-1000ULR aircraft in 2027, paving the way for these groundbreaking services.
