Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is working to forge a consensus with state and territory leaders on implementing national regulations for datacentre developments. This initiative comes in response to growing concerns about the increasing electricity demands and the environmental effects associated with the industry. During a national cabinet meeting, Albanese is anticipated to support the introduction of legislation that would set uniform minimum standards for datacentres. These standards would require datacentres to cover their own infrastructure expenses, prevent upward pressure on energy prices, and minimize water usage.
The proposed regulations also mandate that new datacentre projects take into account their impact on local communities and ensure they are situated away from residential areas, schools, as well as key agricultural or future housing sites. This push for regulation comes as the Australian energy market operator projects a significant rise in datacentre electricity consumption over the next decade. The increase is largely attributed to advancements in artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Electricity usage by datacentres is expected to grow from approximately 5 terawatt-hours to 34 terawatt-hours by the 2035-36 period, which could represent about 13% of the country’s total electricity consumption.
Currently, Australia hosts 165 operational datacentres, with an additional 225 projects in the pipeline. Nevertheless, there remains some uncertainty in the sector, as a notable number of previously planned projects have been canceled. In a related move, Albanese is also preparing to introduce broader legislation on artificial intelligence, which would address issues such as copyright protections, security, safety, and skills development. The government asserts that these reforms will help Australians gain economic advantages from AI while safeguarding creators and bolstering national security.
Despite the government’s intentions, the plans have encountered opposition from some state leaders, particularly concerning the proposed renewable energy requirements for datacentres. This opposition adds a layer of complexity to the political task of establishing consistent national rules. As discussions continue, Albanese aims to balance the need for environmental responsibility with the growth and innovation prospects presented by the burgeoning datacentre industry.
