In a significant escalation of hostilities, Ukraine has reportedly conducted one of its most extensive drone offensives against Russia since the conflict began. According to statements from Russian officials, the assault resulted in at least six fatalities and a large-scale fire at a distribution warehouse near Moscow. Russia’s Defence Ministry alleged that 1,478 Ukrainian drones were intercepted within a 24-hour timeframe, marking the highest number claimed in a single day, though these figures remain unverified by independent sources.
Moscow’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, detailed that approximately 600 drones were aimed at the Moscow area, with 201 of these being destroyed. The assault led to the death of one individual in the region. A severe fire erupted at a Wildberries distribution center near Podolsk, located about 25 miles from Moscow’s center. Ukrainian military sources indicated that the facility, sprawling over 250,000 square meters, suffered extensive damage and was rendered inoperable. Ukrainian authorities have increasingly leveraged long-range drones to target Russian military and economic infrastructures well beyond the immediate conflict zones. They assert that some Wildberries facilities are targeted due to their alleged use for military logistics.
This development underscores Ukraine’s expanding long-range strike capabilities, a strategy mirrored by Russia’s continued reliance on drones and missiles to assault Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Meanwhile, Russian strikes have claimed at least seven lives in Ukraine, with casualties reported in Kryvyi Rih and the Sumy region. A missile strike on Kyiv resulted in injuries to six individuals and ignited fires, notably at a significant book market where many businesses reportedly suffered total losses.
In a related incident, a Spanish fighter jet participating in NATO patrols intercepted and shot down a suspected Russian drone after it breached Romanian airspace, according to NATO officials. On the diplomatic front, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Russia for its persistent attacks on civilian targets, citing that Moscow had launched over 1,550 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided bombs, and 62 missiles against Ukraine in the preceding week alone.
The intensification of drone and missile exchanges between Ukraine and Russia highlights the growing use of long-range weaponry by both sides, which elevates the risk of casualties and destruction extending far from the front lines of the conflict.
