During a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Calgary, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney committed to bolstering Ukraine’s air defense and drone capabilities. This pledge comes with an announcement of C$350 million (US$253 million) in support as part of a U.S.-led initiative. The program is designed to supply Ukraine with military equipment, training, and other forms of defense aid, particularly as the country grapples with escalating Russian missile and drone assaults.
In addition to military assistance, Canada has decided to offer C$450 million in loan guarantees to help fortify Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This financial backing aims to fund the restoration of damaged energy facilities, expand storage capabilities, and enhance the delivery of electricity to vital services, such as hospitals. The Canadian and Ukrainian leaders also formalized a commitment to a “hundred-year partnership,” which will include collaboration in defense, critical minerals, and energy among other sectors.
Moreover, Canada announced that 30% of its newly produced domestic drones would be allocated to Ukraine. These drones are expected to play a crucial role on the battlefield, aiding Ukrainian forces and safeguarding civilians, as emphasized by Zelenskyy. This strategic move highlights the strengthening military ties between the two nations and their shared commitment to Ukraine’s security and sovereignty.
Looking ahead, Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in New York later this month, possibly during the United Nations General Assembly. This meeting is anticipated as part of ongoing efforts to rejuvenate negotiations focused on resolving the ongoing conflict, underscoring the international dimensions of the support Ukraine is receiving against Russian aggression.
