Australia and Fiji have embarked on a significant partnership with the signing of the Ocean of Peace defence alliance, a commitment bolstered by A$1 billion in Australian funding over the coming decade. This initiative is aimed at enhancing regional security and cooperation throughout the Pacific. The agreement was formalized in Suva by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, along with a Vuvale Union treaty that addresses economic collaboration, climate action, healthcare, migration, and infrastructure development.
The defence pact outlines mutual security obligations between the two nations, mandating consultations and joint responses to any threats impacting the sovereignty, peace, or stability of either country. This alliance is described by Australia as one of its most pivotal international partnerships, with Prime Minister Albanese emphasizing the mutual support both countries pledge to offer each other during security crises.
Prime Minister Rabuka expressed optimism about the alliance and suggested that it could potentially expand to include other Pacific nations such as Tonga, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand.
