Australia’s Auto Market Sees Surge: EVs and Hybrids Approach 50% Sales

by admin477351

In Australia, the automotive landscape is experiencing a significant shift as electric and hybrid vehicles constituted almost half of all new car purchases from April to June 2026. This trend highlights a growing consumer preference for alternatives to traditional petrol-powered cars, largely driven by the unpredictable nature of fuel prices.

During this period, battery electric vehicles (EVs) claimed a remarkable 21.03% of the market share, setting a new record. Plug-in hybrids also made a notable impact, accounting for 10.58% of sales. The demand for battery EVs surged dramatically, with sales figures more than doubling from 34,435 in the year’s first quarter to 69,414 in the second quarter.

Conversely, the dominance of petrol-powered vehicles continued to decline, with their market share dropping to an unprecedented low of 50.84%. This decline is part of a broader trend as consumers increasingly turn to more sustainable and cost-effective vehicle options.

This movement towards electric and hybrid vehicles comes amidst concerns over the looming increase in fuel prices. The anticipated rise follows the conclusion of a temporary reduction in fuel excise by the federal government, further incentivizing buyers to explore non-petrol alternatives.
