Canada has approved a substantial $33 billion expansion for LNG Canada in Kitimat, British Columbia, a move poised to double the facility’s production capacity and bolster the country’s access to global energy markets. The Phase 2 expansion is set to increase the plant’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) production by approximately 14 million tonnes annually, elevating its total capacity to 28 million tonnes per year.
This ambitious expansion aligns with Canada’s strategy to diversify its energy export markets and enhance its role as a significant LNG supplier, particularly to Asia and Europe. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that the project would link Canadian natural gas with these growing markets while generating thousands of jobs.
The investment is expected to attract around C$33 billion in private funding and stimulate economic activity across British Columbia and the rest of Canada. A noteworthy aspect of the expansion is the involvement of Indigenous communities. Five First Nations have the opportunity to invest up to C$1 billion for a majority stake in the Phase 2 storage tank, reflecting a commitment to inclusive economic participation.
