Canada has fired back in an escalating trade conflict with the United States by imposing new tariffs on a variety of American goods, totaling billions of dollars. These retaliatory duties, which range from 15% to 50%, took effect at the start of Tuesday, affecting roughly $20 billion in U.S. imports. The targeted items include steel, dairy products, home appliances, agricultural machinery, pulp and paper, as well as electronics.
This move comes as a direct response to the United States’ decision to levy a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian exports. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has voiced a strong stance, indicating that Canada plans to expedite its efforts to lessen its economic reliance on the U.S. by seeking stronger trade ties with other nations.
In addition to the tariffs, U.S. President Donald Trump has taken measures against Canadian goods such as automobiles and raw materials, claiming that Canada has been exploiting the U.S. These actions have impacted products like hockey sticks and cement, which account for about 5.5% of Canada’s exports to the United States.
The trade tensions have spilled over into broader diplomatic disagreements, exacerbating the already strained relationship between the neighboring countries. Trump has also issued a warning to Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier, threatening to limit its sales in the U.S. unless more of its manufacturing is relocated to American soil.
Efforts to negotiate a resolution to the trade dispute hit a stumbling block in August when talks between the two nations collapsed. Canadian officials reported that the U.S. introduced new demands and constraints that Ottawa found unacceptable, halting progress towards an agreement.
